I wrote my best-selling book over 14 years ago and it has been working tirelessly to keep me afloat. To tell you the truth I knew nothing about book marketing when I wrote my first 8 books.

They include, my book won’t sell, I have no idea where to begin, and my book will be pirated. Indeed a renowned consultant in Lagos keeps giving me that last excuse. Well, these excuses are bullshits (as the Americans would say) that keep you grounded.
My friend, you have interests, passions, peeves, skills, stories; go ahead and write and share your stories and passions. When you do you’ll dance all the way to the bank (as Nigerians say). Yes, you’ll beat the hard times.
I mean dancing all the way to the bank to cash your dollars. This is what Jay Conrad Levinson of guerilla marketing fame said about his book, “Someone once asked me how much I made for my first “guerrilla marketing” book. The answer I gave was $10 million. The book itself only paid me about $35,000 in royalties. But the speaking engagements, spinoff books, newsletters, columns, boot-camps, consulting, and wide open doors resulted in the remaining $9,965,000.”
Okay, you may not be able to make $10 million as Uncle Jay did, but what about if you could make 5% of that? Do you know that is a whopping N80 million if you live in Nigeria as the Naira keeps going south?
As you can see, a book is not just about selling physical copies door to door, it’s about “spinoff businesses.” With your book you could found a business, create courses, and join the speaking circuit as a motivational speaker. And much more. These are ways to beat the hard times as you can see.
