When about 6 years ago I asked my friend and namesake, Paul Onwuanibe, to write a book, he laughed and jokingly said, “Paul I have no story to tell – yet.” The emphasis was on “Yet”. Now I believe Paul has a lot of stories to tell as Landmark breaks new milestones.

Not long ago, Landmark Lagos was endorsed by the BBC, Euromoney, and African Property Investment Summit as the most visited business, leisure, and lifestyle destination on the West African coastline. What about that?

I met Paul via phone in 2015 through a mutual friend, Amaechi Okobi, Access Bank’s extraordinary communicator. We invited him to speak at the International Hospitality & Tourism Conference & Exhibition we were organizing that year. When I finally met Paul face-to-face and mentioned to him I’d stayed in one of his properties in Dubai, he refused to confirm or deny it was his property. I knew Paul had something up his sleeves as he hinted he was relocating to Nigeria.

Since our first meeting Paul has shared the snippets of his stories on Experience Annex, the platform for Role Models, Exemplary Leaders and World-Class Entrepreneurs. But what he shared then were the tips of the iceberg as Paul was just getting started.

When Paul had the chance to share the full story of the genesis of Landmark Properties at the Lagos Executive Business Roundtable, which I helped organize in 2019, it was mind-blowing, ennobling, and intoxicatingly inspiring. The story Paul shared was the classic example of the proverbial axiom that says, when life throws you a lemon, make a lemonade out of it.
