You write a book once and profit for life.

Yet stock brokers tout shares but don’t be deceived; when the stock market melts everyone is wiped out.

Let me share a short story concerning my father step-in-law. He started buying shares before I was even born.

He had shares in virtually all the companies quoted on the Nigerian stock exchange.

Sadly when the man died, his stock portfolio was worthless.

He had no professional adviser as most Nigerians who dabble in the stock market, including me.

As a certified and chartered banker, I managed my stock portfolio exactly as Harry Markowitz would have recommended.

However, when the stock market collapsed circa 2009, my stock value tumbled by 92%.

If I had practiced buy and hold, my stock portfolio would have been worth nine figures. But I managed to make eight figures even with withdrawals.

So investing in shares is good, provided you have professional help and stock advisers don’t come cheap. Yet, most of their advice is based on portfolio diversification which is a recipe for disaster compared to concentration.

Compare stocks to books.

Supposed my step-father in-law had written 7 books: think of Chinua Achebe, Cyprian Ekwensi, and Edwin Clark.

Can you guess what would have happened even if he had written 5 trashy books but marketed with finesse? He would have been wealthy.

What about if he’d got hold of a coach and a ghost writer to help him write one best seller? Sad it was too late by the time I met him.

Think of larger-than-life mortals like Chimamanda – who like Oprah, no longer needs a second name to be recognized.

Chimamanda started with one book – Purple Hibiscus.

One book in Oprah’s Book Club instantly turns the table in your favour but it takes time to get there but it’s doable.

And think of lesser mortals like Paul Uduk – he started with one academic book, which raked in five figures: 1994.

That book still sells till this day and has generated eight figures as spin offs.

Even at $2.99, Amazon’s default minimum price for eBooks, Paul should rake in $2,990 per month: $35,880 total.
