If you wish to make money online, you must be as fast and as nimble as the dragon fly.

As a trainer, people ask me all the time how they could make money online. My simple answer is always the same, START.

So if you want to make money online here are the three things you should start doing:

1. Start with a little action, e.g. Learn how others make money online.
2. Follow up with a big action, e.g. Build and grow your email list.
3. Take massive action, e.g. Migrate everything you do online.

Learning how to do these three things will put you on the path to making money online, perhaps your first N1million.

It is as simple as that. You don’t need to take just any action, but the right action, at the right places and at the right scale and your money will inevitably come.

Here are the sequence of things you need to learn as a beginner:

1. Learn how to get noticed.
2. Learn how to get and grow your audience.
3. Learn how to develop and sell your first products.

In all sincerity, as a beginner, those are all you need.

You don’t need to have 10,000 Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter or whatever followers, admirers, likes etc.

As I teach my students, all you need for success is to understand the Basics. When once you understand the Basics, you’re poised for success.

Basics such as making yourself visible so potential customers come to know who you really are, what makes you tick and why they should believe and trust you.

Basics such as building your mailing list from zero to your first 100 customers, and then to 500, and then to 1000.

Basics such as developing your first Entry Level Product. A product that solves a real problem or as internet gurus like to say, takes a customer from point A to point B. That’s all.

The key reason beginners get paralyzed to start is that the lack self believe. They suffer from what psychologists all “imposter’s syndrome.” They silently believe they are not good enough or don’t know enough.  

So one of the things you have to learn as a beginner or even advanced beginner is to push through your lack of self believe or imposter’s syndrome.

I remember when I started out, I was scared to death facing the camera or speaking into the microphone. I just knew my voice was not good enough, my pronunciation was embarrassing and so on.

These fears are figments of your imagination. You are good as you are. That is why sincere internet gurus would advice you to be your authentic self.

Do not try to be like the guru you just met on YouTube because it must have taken that guru 10 or more years to reach where he or she is.

The blogging guru, Jon Morrow, has identified five phases every would-be blogger (or anyone doing business online) must pass through. Here are they:

1. Comprehension
2. Connection
3. Conversion
4. Content
5. Customers

These five phases roughly coincide with the four stages identified by another online business guru, Ramit Sethi. Here are they:

1. Learning Stage
2. Audience Stage
3. Product Stage
4. Sales Stage

The mistake beginners make is to jump to the second or third or fourth stages in the sequence while ignoring the first stage: Learning. This is a recipe for failure.

So you must have the discipline to learn the Basics first before you jump to the next stage.

To me, stage one: Learning (Comprehension), is the most important. It’s impossible to succeed short or long term without the Learning phase.

The Internet is huge, complex and messy. Only a tiny number of people who have disciplined themselves to learn the Basics know how to navigate through the maze.

As a matter of fact you can successfully juggle the other phases if you master phase one: Learning.

That is why some gurus say develop products first while others say build audience first. You can do either if you master the Learning stage.

So in summary, these are the things you should learn to do right away:

1. Learn how to make yourself noticed, credible, and trusted.
2. Learn how to grow an engaged audience.
3. Learn how to create an irresistible product.
4. Learn how to make irresistible offers.
5. Learn how to identify and market your unique value proposition.
6. Learn how to tie everything together to monetize your effort.
7. Learn how to position your brand for long term success.
