In a world of 8.3 billion people driven by AI, how do you play to win long term?

You have to intentionally set yourself up and not be distracted by short term antics.

Today it’s common to see people celebrating 10K, 50K, 100K followers on SM platforms: LN, YT, X, etc.

Two of my friends celebrated their 11K and 30K followers last week on LinkedIn.

It was quite a spectacle and I couldn’t be happier for them.

Then I found out Steven Bartlett, one of the most globally recognized SM brands has 30.73million followers across social media.

For context, the population of Texas is 31.7million and New York’s is 20million.

For our purposes, followers and subscribers mean one and the same thing.

Now, Steven Bartlett is known for a few things and one is his The Diary Of A CEO YouTube Channel.

He’s been doing social media since age 17, and is now 33.

His current networth is about $100m but that’s not the point.

The important thing is that Steven Bartlett in ‘known for something’.

So, the question is, what are you known for?

Writing scroll-stopping posts on LinkedIn, creating funny videos on TT and FB will not cut it.

Of course they can make a few people laugh and make you a local celebrity but no further.

To win long term, you have to:
↳ Create intellectual property (IP)
↳ Develop Frameworks (part of IP)
↳ Master one-to-many strategies
↳ Acquire expertise in content funnel

As a professional the place to start is your IP.

And the easiest IP to create is a book.

And thanks to AI, you can write a book in less than seven days.

A book has no equal.
It puts you miles ahead of your peers and rivals.

With a book you can explain your frameworks and own an estate in someone’s mind.

As author, the best thing you can do for your book is to build your author platform.

You have to start building your author platform before you write a single word.

This is why.

Your author platform is what puts you out there:

• As someone people should listen to
• Take your opinion seriously
• Read whatever you write
• (SM. Website. OPS. Newsletters. Books. etc.).

Building your author platform is the “only” way today to give your book a fighting chance.

You don’t have to be a loud TikToker.

Bridges is my second book and became an instant best-seller in Nigeria.

Both the first (2009) and second (2011) editions were published by Author House, USA.

Bridges catalogued Nigeria’s customer service woes in all its ugliness.

I named government agencies shortchanging the people:
(PHCN – before NEPA – WAEC, JAMB, CAC, etc.).

This is how it happened and why I wrote the book.

In the 80s and 90s, “customer service” was the rage.

The Japanese were snatching markets in major industries from the Americans and Europeans.

The Americans fought back with Malcolm Baldridge Quality Awards.

In 1982 Tom Peters and Robert Waterman Jr. released In Search of Excellence.

In Search was quickly followed by Passion for Excellence and Thriving on Chaos.

The books set the world on fire.

I became a convert.

At the time Tom wrote In Search, he was a staff of McKinsey.

McKinsey formulated the 7-S Framework (The Happy Atom).

Not to be outdone, PwC, BCG, Accenture jumped into the fray with their frameworks.

I started teaching “Service Excellence”, Organized workshops and executive roundtables.

Within a few years, I became a customer service guru.

My students “pleaded” I write a book and ignite a revolution.

The revolution didn’t take off but I wrote Bridges to the Customer’s Heart.

I was working full time, so it took more than five years to complete.

But I was scared I didn’t belong to McKinsey, Accenture, BCG.

I didn’t believe in myself.

Who needed another book on customer service?

Who even knows you?

The doubting voices kept humming.

Imposter syndrome fueled procrastination which fueled perfectionism.

So, I left the manuscript in my drawer for at least three years.

A trip to Canada and a meeting with Author House book acquisition expert saved the day.

Bridges took me to places I never could imagine when I started writing it.

Founders and C-Suite executives threw their doors open.

Private jets and helicopters were dispatched to pick “the author” and “motivational speaker”.

I spoke with founders on golf courses and keynoted retreats.

Write about it. Today. Don’t wait.

Friday night out with friends (Heineken hour)

I worked 9 – 5 for more than 25 years and now learning how to build business online.

While doing 9 – 5, I failed uncountable number of times.

For 7+ years with goverment, no promotion – I didn’t belong.

But I loved my job and poured my heart into it.

I worked with some of the poorest peasant farmers in Sokoto State.

(now Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara).

They taught me a lesson in resiliency and hope.

Though I was stagnating, I was adding value to myself.

(Borrowed books from The British Council). Got ACIB. MBA

Along the way, something clicked and I finally crossed over to the private sector.

Nigeria’s most innovative bank at the time.

I was in my game – as the training arrowhead.

Today:

I own a house.
I have children.
(+Grand children)
I understand love.
I wake up at 5:00am.
I know how to say yes.
I have a bedtime routine.
I know what my end goal is.
I take 10,000 steps every day.
I do free training every month.

I always have a plan…I follow it.
I traveled to 35 countries of the world.
I know how much I’ll earn next month.
I read 10 books unfailingly every month.
I say yes to interesting meetings with C-Suite execs.
I feel comfortable calling myself “Book Connoisseur”
I became friends with founders and multimillionaires.

I read Alex Hormozi’s and Gary Vee’s best-selling books.

I learned digital marketing and started making money online.
I know where I’ll be next year and the year after and the year after.

When I’m 80 years old I know my life will be 100 times better than I imagined when I left my small village of Anua.

(Uyo, Akwa Ibom State).

And in many ways, it’s getting even better.

Because I am…
– Happy.
– Contented
– Fit and healthy.
– Financially free (almost).

And more importantly,
I have more than 20,000 ex-students and about 1000+ call me “The Coach”.

This is my word for you:
1. Ignore 99.99% of what people tell you.
2. Build the life that makes YOU happy today.
3. Not the life others think you should have tomorrow.

Follow no one, not even me, follow your heart.

Because only God knows what’s best for you.

I flew 1,000 kilometers to honour my client (now a friend) and here I share why.

Mfon is today not just a client but a friend.

The First CEO I Ghostwrote For and What Surprised Me

When I first ghostwrote for a CEO, I expected complexity.
I prepared for jargon, hierarchy, and endless corporate layers.

Instead, something else surprised me entirely.

What I encountered was not a lack of intelligence.
Rather, it was a struggle with structure.

The Structure Gap Most Leaders Face

Despite decades of leadership experience, boardroom influence, and global exposure, this CEO struggled to structure his own story.
That struggle did not co

me from confusion.

When Jim Ovia published Africa Rise & Shine, he didn’t just release another founder’s memoir.

He documented a philosophy.

The most difficult career decision I ever made was to choose equity over pay checks.

On Monday, September 13, 2010, I retired honorably from what many would call a dream job at Diamond Bank, one of Nigeria’s most admired banks at the time.

It was not a dramatic exit.
No scandal.
No headline.
Just a quiet but heavy decision.

What made it truly difficult was this: I walked away with over ₦12 million in debt hanging over my neck like the sword of Damocles.

No one retires under such circumstances without deep reflection. I didn’t wake up one morning and decide to gamble with my life. There were reasons. Powerful ones. But that is a story for another day.

What I want to share here is why I refused a mouth-watering offer that came barely 24 hours after I hung my gloves.

I had spent 27 years in the financial services industry, almost evenly split between development banking and commercial banking – public sector and private sector. Both institutions were, at the time, places people dreamed of working. They offered excellent learning, exposure, and professional prestige.

Yet, in both places, I stagnated.

Despite strong performance, I didn’t receive the promotions my work justified. That too is a longer story. But instead of folding my arms, I invested in myself. I added professional banking qualifications. I earned an MBA. I sharpened my skills.

By the time circumstances forced me to exit, I was a highly sought-after professional – doing the work of a General Manager, yet officially four levels below that rank.

So when the phone rang, I understood the temptation.

The caller spoke confidently:
“We know your capacity. We’ll give you everything you want. Two levels above your last role. After six months, you’ll be promoted again.”

Principal Manager.
Departmental control.
A position in one of Nigeria’s biggest banks.

For context, this came with serious perks.

A generous car loan for a top-range Toyota Land Cruiser Prado – the status symbol of that era and even today.
A bigger mortgage refinance for a choice property around the Lekki axis.
Company-paid driver.
Gardener.
Silent generators.
All the trappings of executive comfort.

Any desperate man would have jumped at it.

And yes, I was desperate.

Debt.
Loss of status.
A battered car.
An uncertain future.

But I dismissed the offer with a wave of the hand.

That single act remains the most difficult career decision I ever made.

Why?

Because I understood something many professionals learn too late: some offers are golden traps. They shine brilliantly, but once you step in, they close quietly around your ankles.

I have always cherished independence.
The freedom to be myself.
The freedom to think clearly.
The freedom to walk away when values are threatened.
The freedom to choose the straight and narrow, even when it is lonely.

Money is powerful. No doubt about it.
But money is also intoxicating.

Like power, it can distort judgment.
Like religion, it can become an opium that dulls discernment.
Too much of it – especially when tied to compromised systems – can blind you to nobler pursuits.

Today, when I look back, I am grateful I chose independence.

I now travel to conferences across borders.
I advise and coach C-suite executives on intellectual property, positioning, and platform mastery.
I build communities of learners.
I acquire new skills by writing and reading books.
I live a life of purpose, not just perks.

It is not perfect.
But it is authentic. Equity as Tony Elumelu has demonstrated is better than pay checks. A lot of folks find this out too late.

Whenever you stand at a crossroads – tempted to choose between quick money and long-term independence – pause.

Ask yourself hard questions.
What will this choice cost me in five years?
In ten?
In my peace of mind?
In my freedom to think and act?

Money can be earned again.
Independence, once surrendered, is painfully hard to reclaim.

Choose wisely.

If your career ended today, would you still own your voice, your mind, and your future?
