JAPA by BWC Alumni Member Funmi Modupe

In a world of 8.3 billion people driven by AI, how do you play to win long term?

You have to intentionally set yourself up and not be distracted by short term antics.

Today it’s common to see people celebrating 10K, 50K, 100K followers on SM platforms: LN, YT, X, etc.

Two of my friends celebrated their 11K and 30K followers last week on LinkedIn.

It was quite a spectacle and I couldn’t be happier for them.

Then I found out Steven Bartlett, one of the most globally recognized SM brands has 30.73million followers across social media.

For context, the population of Texas is 31.7million and New York’s is 20million.

For our purposes, followers and subscribers mean one and the same thing.

Now, Steven Bartlett is known for a few things and one is his The Diary Of A CEO YouTube Channel.

He’s been doing social media since age 17, and is now 33.

His current networth is about $100m but that’s not the point.

The important thing is that Steven Bartlett in ‘known for something’.

So, the question is, what are you known for?

Writing scroll-stopping posts on LinkedIn, creating funny videos on TT and FB will not cut it.

Of course they can make a few people laugh and make you a local celebrity but no further.

To win long term, you have to:
↳ Create intellectual property (IP)
↳ Develop Frameworks (part of IP)
↳ Master one-to-many strategies
↳ Acquire expertise in content funnel

As a professional the place to start is your IP.

And the easiest IP to create is a book.

And thanks to AI, you can write a book in less than seven days.

A book has no equal.
It puts you miles ahead of your peers and rivals.

With a book you can explain your frameworks and own an estate in someone’s mind.

Here are examples:
↳ Steven Bartlett: The Diary of a CEO, and other books
↳ Alex Hormozi: $100M Money Models, and other books
↳ Simon Sinek: Start With Why, and other books
↳ James Clear: Atomic Habits

In their books they explain their frameworks, which help consolidate their reputation.

For example
↳ Steven Bartlett owns the ‘Five Buckets’ Framework.
↳ Alex Hormozi owns the ‘Core Four’ framework.
↳ Simon Sinek owns the ‘Golden Circle’ framework.
↳ James Clear owns the ‘Habit Loop’ framework.

And for your information, I own the ‘7 Pillars and 2 Keys’ business mastery framework.

So the question is, what are you doing to ensure you win long term?

Which books are you writing and which frameworks are you developing?

You can learn how to write a book by joining Book Writing Clinic (BWC) from the comfort of your home.

It’s a paid event billed for 7 March and the way to join is by following this link to pay the N35,000 fee.

Once you pay, you’re manually registered and pre-reading materials sent to you.

If you live around Lagos megacity, you’re invited to register for both the virtual and face-to-face Meet-UP.

The Meet-Up is N45,000 and will take place in Lagos on 14 March.

Here is the link to pay for both (virtual and Meet-Up).

The best time to have done anything was 20 years ago.

The next best time is now.

Write a book and start enjoying the benefits of long term focus.

Share your thoughts by leaving comments below.

Steven Bartlett, Founder DOAC YT Channel (15m Followers)

As author, the best thing you can do for your book is to build your author platform.

You have to start building your author platform before you write a single word.

This is why.

Your author platform is what puts you out there:

As someone people should listen to

Take your opinion seriously

Read whatever you write

(SM. Website. OPS. Newsletters. Books. etc.).

Building your author platform is the “only” way today to give your book a fighting chance.

You don’t have to be a loud TikToker.

You just have to be an authority (in something – your niche).

Of course if you can TikTok, the better.

Seth Godin understood this earlier than most other authors.

He’s been blogging since 1999 (25 years).

You were not born then or too young to care?

Steven Bartlett was 7 years in 1999.

He started “dabbling” into social media at 17.

(MySpace. Yahoo!, etc.)

He was inspired by Set Godin.

Today Steven has 30.74m followers across social media platforms.

So, his books become multiple best-sellers immediately they are released.

Because you need to sell just 5,000 copies within 7 days across different markets.

(For your book to become a New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The UK Times best-seller).

With 30,740,000 followers, even if 1% buy your book… you can complete the sentence.

If you’re one of the 450 plus BWC alumni, you can ignore everything I’ve ever taught you before about book writing.

But please don’t ignore what you’re reading (now from me) about author platform.

Start building one as if your life depended on it.

Because it does.

Else, your book will become a door stopper.

Get on with it: build your LinkedIn, Instagram, X and FB platforms.

(But start with one – divide and conquer).

Invite my agency (Vision & Talent Media) to help you.

I’ve just finished reading The Diary of a CEO by Steven Bartlett.

It became the fastest-selling personal development book since records began,

hit the #1 spot on the Sunday Times bestseller list, and is a Wall Street Journal bestseller.

(DID YOU READ THAT?)

Let it sink in.

I wrote my best-selling book Bridges to the Customer’s Heart in 2009.

I did zilch about my author platform.

(I was doing 9-5; you’re to be seen, not to be heard).

Because of that book they sacked me from work in 2010. (That’s a story for another day).

I started BWC (Book Writing Clinic) in 2015.

I talked about book marketing in generic terms.

Knowing what I know now, marketing should be on the front burner – before starting your manuscript.

I discovered that selling a book is 10 times harder than writing one.

That’s why we must put building our author platforms as the #1 priority.

Jump onto Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube.

Post daily even if you get ignored.

Just continue pressing ahead as I’m doing.

Even Alex Hormozi (11.55m followers), Ali Abdaal (8.6m) and Seth Godin (1.1m) started somewhere.

So, what are you doing about your author platform?

When are you going to start building one?

If you’re wondering where and how to start, consider joining iBMC (Internet Business Mastery Course).

Also consider Online Course Creators Community For Newbies And Advanced Beginners.

It’s a Facebook group I created in 2020.

It’s set to hit 28,000 members. Join by following this link.

Also consider learning book writing by registering for Book Writing Clinic (BWC) by me, Paul Uduk.

You see, followers without a product to sell at the backend is a waste of time.

Steven Bartlett became a multi-millionaire by creating products he sold to his followers.

BWC for Quarter One is billed for Saturday 7 March, at 7.30am. It’s to be organized as a hybrid.

Whether you’re a BWC member published author or aspiring to get your first book off the ground, I invite you to attend.

Since I started BWC in 2015, a lot have changed. I’ll be hammering on sales strategies.

And how to build an author platform.

If you live around the Lagos area, there will be a physical Meet-Up in Victoria Island on 14 March.

(The virtual class is on 7 March).

It’s a paid course.

Fee is N45K for the virtual class and face-to-face Meet-Up.

To attend the Meet-Up, you must attend the virtual workshop. No exemption.

If you’re attending only the virtual BWC, fee is N35K or its equivalent in USD.

If you want to attend BWC plus Meet-UP in Victoria Island pay here.

If you want to attend BWC virtual only pay here.

Bridges is my second book and became an instant best-seller in Nigeria.

Both the first (2009) and second (2011) editions were published by Author House, USA.

Bridges catalogued Nigeria’s customer service woes in all its ugliness.

I named government agencies shortchanging the people:
(PHCN – before NEPA – WAEC, JAMB, CAC, etc.).

This is how it happened and why I wrote the book.

In the 80s and 90s, “customer service” was the rage.

The Japanese were snatching markets in major industries from the Americans and Europeans.

The Americans fought back with Malcolm Baldridge Quality Awards.

In 1982 Tom Peters and Robert Waterman Jr. released In Search of Excellence.

In Search was quickly followed by Passion for Excellence and Thriving on Chaos.

The books set the world on fire.

I became a convert.

At the time Tom wrote In Search, he was a staff of McKinsey.

McKinsey formulated the 7-S Framework (The Happy Atom).

Not to be outdone, PwC, BCG, Accenture jumped into the fray with their frameworks.

I started teaching “Service Excellence”, Organized workshops and executive roundtables.

Within a few years, I became a customer service guru.

My students “pleaded” I write a book and ignite a revolution.

The revolution didn’t take off but I wrote Bridges to the Customer’s Heart.

I was working full time, so it took more than five years to complete.

But I was scared I didn’t belong to McKinsey, Accenture, BCG.

I didn’t believe in myself.

Who needed another book on customer service?

Who even knows you?

The doubting voices kept humming.

Imposter syndrome fueled procrastination which fueled perfectionism.

So, I left the manuscript in my drawer for at least three years.

A trip to Canada and a meeting with Author House book acquisition expert saved the day.

Bridges took me to places I never could imagine when I started writing it.

Founders and C-Suite executives threw their doors open.

Private jets and helicopters were dispatched to pick “the author” and “motivational speaker”.

I spoke with founders on golf courses and keynoted retreats.

Do you have a passion for something?

Write about it. Today. Don’t wait.

Friday night out with friends (Heineken hour)

I worked 9 – 5 for more than 25 years and now learning how to build business online.

While doing 9 – 5, I failed uncountable number of times.

For 7+ years with goverment, no promotion – I didn’t belong.

But I loved my job and poured my heart into it.

I worked with some of the poorest peasant farmers in Sokoto State.

(now Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara).

They taught me a lesson in resiliency and hope.

Though I was stagnating, I was adding value to myself.

(Borrowed books from The British Council). Got ACIB. MBA

Along the way, something clicked and I finally crossed over to the private sector.

Nigeria’s most innovative bank at the time.

I was in my game – as the training arrowhead.

Today:

I own a house.
I have children.
(+Grand children)
I understand love.
I wake up at 5:00am.
I know how to say yes.
I have a bedtime routine.
I know what my end goal is.
I take 10,000 steps every day.
I do free training every month.

I always have a plan…I follow it.
I traveled to 35 countries of the world.
I know how much I’ll earn next month.
I read 10 books unfailingly every month.
I say yes to interesting meetings with C-Suite execs.
I feel comfortable calling myself “Book Connoisseur”
I became friends with founders and multimillionaires.

I read Alex Hormozi’s and Gary Vee’s best-selling books.

I learned digital marketing and started making money online.
I know where I’ll be next year and the year after and the year after.

When I’m 80 years old I know my life will be 100 times better than I imagined when I left my small village of Anua.

(Uyo, Akwa Ibom State).

And in many ways, it’s getting even better.

Because I am…
– Happy.
– Contented
– Fit and healthy.
– Financially free (almost).

And more importantly,
I have more than 20,000 ex-students and about 1000+ call me “The Coach”.

This is my word for you:
1. Ignore 99.99% of what people tell you.
2. Build the life that makes YOU happy today.
3. Not the life others think you should have tomorrow.

Follow no one, not even me, follow your heart.

Because only God knows what’s best for you.

The post I worked 9 – 5 for 25+ years (now Building Business Online) first appeared on Official website of Paul Uduk.

Some relationships evolve into lasting friendships.

Mfon Udom was five years my senior in secondary school: But we never met.

Our paths crossed when I went to Nigeria’s best airline, Ibom Air, to pitch for customer service training.

As the chairman of the panel of assessors, he was calm, methodical and dignified.

I did my best; then came questions from left, right and centre.

Final verdict: we’ll get back to you.
(REAL INTERPRETATION: YOU DIDN’T MAKE THE CUT).

For six months, no news from Ibom Air.

The body language of the other executives: neutral.

I concluded: matter closed.

Then out of the blues, a call from the MD/CEO, Ibom Air, Mfon.

Let’s see when next you’re in town: here is my home address.

Long story short, a seven figure book deal (plus all out of pocket expenses paid separately).

Mfon is today not just a client but a friend.

Upon retiring from his position, Ibom Air held a 5-Star send forth for their pioneer MD/CEO.

Mfon made sure my name was on the protocol list. Official Invitation from Ibom Air.

That’s how I flew 1,000 km + from Lagos to Uyo to witness history.

You see, Mfon is not an ordinary MD/CEO.
Mfon is the epitome of grace, tenacity and courage. And integrity.

When others panicked (in the cockpit when he was flying) he stayed calm.

Mfon makes things happen not by braggadocio, but wisdom honed over five decades.

His first, middle and last name is humility. And honour.

He viscerally knows that leaders eat last. And practices it.

So, here is my advice to you operating on social media.

Don’t underestimate the value you bring to the table.

Your posts may get 2 or 5 likes, views and no comments, but those interested in your service are lurking in the wings.

Watching. Assessing. Evaluating.
(No liking. Just actively trying to confirm you have what it takes).

Make sure you know your onions.

Someone may call you out of the blues for your 7-figure moment: like Mfon did.

Yes, ensure you have what it takes.

If you’re meeting me for the first time, I help very senior executives bring their stories to the world.

Today I’m holding Executive Book Roundtable (EBR) in Lagos: 15 executives are attending.

Determined to produce a moveable work of art (called a book) in 12 to 18 months’ time?

I’m the one you should call.

Comment to inspire your friends to lead with authenticity – and write books.

The post I flew 1000 km to honour my client (now a Friend) first appeared on Official website of Paul Uduk.

The First CEO I Ghostwrote For and What Surprised Me

When I first ghostwrote for a CEO, I expected complexity.
I prepared for jargon, hierarchy, and endless corporate layers.

Instead, something else surprised me entirely.

What I encountered was not a lack of intelligence.
Rather, it was a struggle with structure.

The Structure Gap Most Leaders Face

Despite decades of leadership experience, boardroom influence, and global exposure, this CEO struggled to structure his own story.
That struggle did not co

me from confusion.
It came from the nature of le

adership itself.

Leadership is lived in action, not written in paragraphs.
Executives think in decisions, frameworks, numbers, and people.
However, books demand something different.

They require narrative.
They demand sequence.

More importantly, they call for reflection and coherence.

As a result, many leaders who can run global organizations find it difficult to organize their own journey on paper.
Not because they lack substance, but because their experience was never designed for storytelling.

The Moment That Changed Everything

During one working session, he paused.
Then he said something I will never forget.

“Paul, you helped me understand my own journey better. I didn’t realize how much I’ve lived.”

In that moment, the real gap became obvious.
Leaders carry entire libraries of wisdom internally.

Yet, very few organize any of it externally.

Although experience accumulates naturally, meaning does not.
Without structure, insight remains scattered.
Without documentation, wisdom stays hidden.

That single conversation later became the foundation of my Executive Legacy Blueprint, which now helps leaders turn lived experience into clear intellectual assets.
You can explore how that framework works through the Book Writing Clinic.

The Real Problem With Executive Experience

Experience alone is not the issue.
Unstructured experience is.

Many executives assume their legacy is obvious.
Unfortunately, clarity rarely survives silence.

Ghostwriting, therefore, is not about writing for leaders.
Instead, it is about helping leaders make sense of a lifetime.
It is about extracting patterns, naming lessons, and arranging insights into something others can learn from.

According to research published by Harvard Business Review, leaders who articulate their thinking clearly increase both influence and organizational alignment.
Writing, when done well, becomes a leadership multiplier rather than a personal exercise.
You can read more about this relationship between leadership and narrative on Harvard Business Review.

Why This Matters More Than Ever

Today’s leaders operate in fast-moving environments.
Decisions happen quickly.
Lessons are learned silently.

However, industries do not evolve on instinct alone.
They evolve when leaders slow down enough to document what works.

A book does not just preserve memory.
It creates reference points.
It turns lived experience into public infrastructure.

That is why documenting leadership is no longer optional.
It is a responsibility.

A Question Worth Sitting With

If someone tried documenting your journey today, how easily would they find the story worth preserving?
Would your insights appear organized or scattered?
Would your lessons be obvious or buried?

More importantly, when will you take control of that narrative?

If you are ready to start that conversation, then let’s talk.
The fastest way to preserve your legacy is through your book.

Join the Legacy Book Accelerator Program and begin structuring what you already know.
I’m Paul Uduk, and through the Book Writing Clinic, I want us to master book writing and become authors in 2026 through a clear, practical process.

Your experience already matters.
Now it is time to organize it.

The post The First CEO I Ghostwrote For and What Surprised Me first appeared on Official website of Paul Uduk.

Jack Welch didn’t just lead GE.
He created a management language still quoted decades later.

Robert Townsend didn’t simply run Avis.
He questioned hierarchy so profoundly that Up the Organization became a quiet rebellion in book form.

These leaders didn’t write to summarize success.
They wrote to transform thinking.
They didn’t chase trends. They created reference points.
They didn’t wait for retirement. They wrote while leading.
They didn’t wait for applause. They documented while it was uncomfortable.

The Power of Documented Leadership

Books do more than preserve ideas.
They turn private lessons into public frameworks.
They convert instinct into repeatable processes.
They standardize thinking.
That’s how industries mature.

Look at African leaders today.
They solve problems textbooks haven’t named:
Mobile money. Informal economies. Infrastructure leapfrogging.

Yet most wisdom remains trapped.
In meetings. Voice notes. Memories.
We wait for retirement. For the right time. For credibility.
Meanwhile, industries move forward without our frameworks.

The Uncomfortable Truth

Leadership that isn’t documented eventually disappears.
Your ideas. Your insights. Your battle-tested tools.
They don’t belong in your head. They belong in a book.

Not next year. Not when things slow down.
Now.

Because books don’t just preserve legacies.
They shape industries.

At Paul Uduk’s Book Writing Clinic and Executive Legacy Blueprint, we guide leaders from idea to published authority.
We’ve seen leaders turn decades of experience into books that define markets.
We’ve helped over 350 aspiring authors in Africa transform their insights into published works that matter.

Why Writing Matters More Than Ever

A book is more than pages.
It’s a public declaration of expertise.
It’s the framework your industry can rely on.
It’s the blueprint future leaders will follow.

Books like Atomic Habits, Start With Why, and The Tipping Point didn’t just succeed.
They created ecosystems of influence.
Why?
Because the authors became their book’s loudest advocates.
Because they didn’t wait for recognition. They shaped the conversation.

Your book can do the same.
It can turn your private knowledge into public infrastructure.
It can make your industry move faster, smarter, and more efficiently.

How African Leaders Can Lead Through Writing

You face unique challenges.
Constraints others can’t see.
Solutions textbooks won’t capture.

Documenting these experiences:
Creates a reference others can follow.
Solidifies your authority in your field.
Converts your instinct into scalable frameworks.

At Paul Uduk Book Writing Clinic, leaders learn how to turn insights into influence.
From writing to publishing, we ensure your legacy reaches the right people.
We show leaders how to build books that outlive them and shape industries in the process.

Don’t Wait for Permission

Too many wait for the perfect moment.
The perfect audience.
The perfect timing.

The truth is there is no perfect moment.
The industry won’t wait. Your insights must lead now.
When leaders document their ideas, industries evolve.
When they don’t, industries stagnate or someone else fills the gap.

Your Ideas Deserve a Stage

Books are silent.
But a book on a stage becomes alive.
It commands attention.
It shapes thinking.
It creates movement.

James Clear didn’t just write Atomic Habits.
Simon Sinek didn’t just publish Start With Why.
Malcolm Gladwell didn’t just release The Tipping Point.

They turned books into platforms.
They became the voice.
They moved industries.

From Knowledge to Legacy

At Vision and Talent Press, we help leaders turn ideas into books.
At Book Writing Clinic Intensive, we guide experts to become authors in as little as 16 weeks.
From concept to manuscript to published authority, your legacy can begin today.

Your book doesn’t just capture what you know.
It amplifies it.
It standardizes it.
It ensures that your insight outlives you.

The Question Every Leader Must Ask

If your insights shaped an industry,
Which industry would it be?

It’s time to stop waiting.
It’s time to write.
It’s time to move your industry.

Hello Friend, Paul here!

A Very Happy New Year guys!

Hope the year has started on a sound note?

Hope you are crushing it already – in your mind!

I have 5,500 friends on WhatsApp and my newsletter on Substack added a lot of new subscribers recently.

So I wanted to re-introduce myself.

I’m Paul.

The one on the left of the picture with my friend Ifeanyi from Airport Golden Tulip Hotel.

If you don’t know me.

I retired from my job and started Vision & Talent 15 years ago.

I added book coaching 10 years ago and digital marketing 5 years ago and have since trained 10,000+.

I built a small, engaged audience of 2,000+ people (including 750+ BWC and iBMC members, founders and C-Suite executives) from zero.

They liked my books, content and courses and asked me to help them with theirs.

We got amazing results.

It led to me working with great founders and executives like Ben Ofungwu Sr., Dr. Eniayewun Ademuyiwa Benjamin, Dr. Ernest Azudialu Obiejesi, Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong Jr., and Mfon Udom.

With fellow consultants and academics building personal brands like Joel Omeike, Phil Maduagwu, Fayo Williams, Pearl Kanu, Prof. Lere Baale, Prof. Paul Udofot and Prof. Olusola Oyewole.

We wrote more great books and contents.

Developed growth frameworks and processes.

Got invited by world-class consultants and digital-first experts like Dr. Uyi Abraham, Tayo Bright and Arthur Ozoigbo.

Built bigger, even more engaged audiences.

I found my calling doing this.

Helping my clients to write great books and make amazing content.

Building awesome BWC and iBMC communities that hold members accountable – and rich at the back end.

And that’s why I am still here and inviting you to join our BWC community and subscribe to my SWIFT newsletter.

To help you do the same.

So what can I help you with in 2026?

Reply with one problem I can solve for you this year.

Make it uncomplicated: just one goal.

I’ll make it my mission to serve you.

Drop your email address and phone number if you want to join BWC or iBMC communities.

Have a great year ahead and I’ll look forward to reading from you.

Cheers!

When Jim Ovia published Africa Rise & Shine, he didn’t just release another founder’s memoir.

He documented a philosophy.

That single decision transformed the book into something far more enduring than a personal success story. It became a reference point for African banking. A blueprint for leadership. A manual for how African enterprises can scale, compete globally, and still retain their identity.

Today, it is impossible to have a serious conversation about modern Nigerian banking without touching ideas that Ovia articulated – either directly or indirectly – in that book.

More Than a Founder’s Story

Africa Rise & Shine did three critical things.

First, it reframed Nigeria’s banking evolution. Rather than portraying growth as accidental or luck-driven, Ovia showed the deliberate thinking, discipline, and long-term vision behind Zenith Bank’s rise.

Second, it captured the birth of a global African brand. The book documented how local relevance and global standards can coexist – an idea many African businesses still struggle to reconcile.

Third, it became a leadership manual. Thousands of professionals, founders, and executives didn’t read it for entertainment. They studied it to understand decision-making, risk, governance, and institutional culture.

Why the Book Was So Powerful

The strength of the book lies in what Ovia chose to document.

He didn’t merely list milestones or achievements.
He documented philosophy.
He explained strategy.
He articulated a way of thinking.

That distinction matters.

Facts age. Philosophy endures.

By focusing on principles rather than events, Ovia ensured that the book would outlive his tenure as CEO and remain relevant to leaders who would never work in his organization.

More importantly, he demonstrated what becomes possible when African executives own their narratives instead of allowing others -consultants, analysts, or foreign observers – to define them.

The Quiet Confidence of Leadership

My first close encounter with Jim Ovia remains vivid.

He was still the MD/CEO of Zenith Bank at the time. The venue was the Chartered Institute of Banking of Nigeria Annual Lecture at Eko Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.

He arrived alone.

No sirens.
No bodyguards.
No fanfare.

He walked in quietly and sat among ordinary members at the end of the hall. Many attendees had no idea who had just entered. I was one of the few who recognized him and quickly alerted the organizers before he was ushered to the high table.

That same day, Mr. Ovia – now Dr. Ovia – was being inducted as a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria.

That moment revealed something books later confirmed: true leadership does not announce itself loudly. It is calm. Confident. Grounded.

He Didn’t Need to Write a Book

When Jim Ovia published Africa Rise & Shine in 2018, his estimated net worth was about $825 million.

He didn’t need a book to raise capital.
He didn’t need visibility.
He didn’t need credibility.

He could have comfortably stepped back and “enjoyed” the fruits of decades of work.

Instead, he chose to document his thinking.

That choice separates wealth from leadership.

Wealth accumulates assets.
Leadership preserves ideas.

By writing, Ovia ensured that his philosophy would remain accessible to future leaders long after boardrooms and balance sheets had changed.

The Power of Executive Books

Executive books don’t merely describe what happened.
They teach how to think.

They reveal decision-making frameworks.
They show how leaders interpret uncertainty.
They document principles that can be adapted across industries.

Across Africa, founders, CEOs, and public-sector leaders possess insights of equal depth and value. Many have built institutions under far more complex conditions than their global counterparts.

Yet too many of these stories remain undocumented.

The result is a leadership vacuum – where experience disappears when careers end.

Ovia avoided that fate by writing.

And today, his ideas continue to influence conversations about banking, governance, and African enterprise.

Your Narrative Matters

Your leadership journey holds insights that could reshape your industry.

Your strategy could become a blueprint others follow.
Your philosophy could influence the next generation of leaders.
Your mistakes could become lessons that save others years.

But only if you document them.

History does not remember executives who merely worked hard.
It remembers those who took the time to think – and document.

A Final Thought

Every serious leader eventually faces a quiet question:

What will remain after I leave the room?

Jim Ovia answered that question with a book.

Perhaps it’s time you considered yours.

The most difficult career decision I ever made was to choose equity over pay checks.

On Monday, September 13, 2010, I retired honorably from what many would call a dream job at Diamond Bank, one of Nigeria’s most admired banks at the time.

It was not a dramatic exit.
No scandal.
No headline.
Just a quiet but heavy decision.

What made it truly difficult was this: I walked away with over ₦12 million in debt hanging over my neck like the sword of Damocles.

No one retires under such circumstances without deep reflection. I didn’t wake up one morning and decide to gamble with my life. There were reasons. Powerful ones. But that is a story for another day.

What I want to share here is why I refused a mouth-watering offer that came barely 24 hours after I hung my gloves.

I had spent 27 years in the financial services industry, almost evenly split between development banking and commercial banking – public sector and private sector. Both institutions were, at the time, places people dreamed of working. They offered excellent learning, exposure, and professional prestige.

Yet, in both places, I stagnated.

Despite strong performance, I didn’t receive the promotions my work justified. That too is a longer story. But instead of folding my arms, I invested in myself. I added professional banking qualifications. I earned an MBA. I sharpened my skills.

By the time circumstances forced me to exit, I was a highly sought-after professional – doing the work of a General Manager, yet officially four levels below that rank.

So when the phone rang, I understood the temptation.

The caller spoke confidently:
“We know your capacity. We’ll give you everything you want. Two levels above your last role. After six months, you’ll be promoted again.”

Principal Manager.
Departmental control.
A position in one of Nigeria’s biggest banks.

For context, this came with serious perks.

A generous car loan for a top-range Toyota Land Cruiser Prado – the status symbol of that era and even today.
A bigger mortgage refinance for a choice property around the Lekki axis.
Company-paid driver.
Gardener.
Silent generators.
All the trappings of executive comfort.

Any desperate man would have jumped at it.

And yes, I was desperate.

Debt.
Loss of status.
A battered car.
An uncertain future.

But I dismissed the offer with a wave of the hand.

That single act remains the most difficult career decision I ever made.

Why?

Because I understood something many professionals learn too late: some offers are golden traps. They shine brilliantly, but once you step in, they close quietly around your ankles.

I have always cherished independence.
The freedom to be myself.
The freedom to think clearly.
The freedom to walk away when values are threatened.
The freedom to choose the straight and narrow, even when it is lonely.

Money is powerful. No doubt about it.
But money is also intoxicating.

Like power, it can distort judgment.
Like religion, it can become an opium that dulls discernment.
Too much of it – especially when tied to compromised systems – can blind you to nobler pursuits.

Today, when I look back, I am grateful I chose independence.

I now travel to conferences across borders.
I advise and coach C-suite executives on intellectual property, positioning, and platform mastery.
I build communities of learners.
I acquire new skills by writing and reading books.
I live a life of purpose, not just perks.

It is not perfect.
But it is authentic. Equity as Tony Elumelu has demonstrated is better than pay checks. A lot of folks find this out too late.

Whenever you stand at a crossroads – tempted to choose between quick money and long-term independence – pause.

Ask yourself hard questions.
What will this choice cost me in five years?
In ten?
In my peace of mind?
In my freedom to think and act?

Money can be earned again.
Independence, once surrendered, is painfully hard to reclaim.

Choose wisely.

If your career ended today, would you still own your voice, your mind, and your future?

That question has guided my life ever since.

The post The Most Difficult Career Decision I Ever Made (2026) first appeared on Official website of Paul Uduk.
