Instead, something else surprised me entirely.

The Structure Gap Most Leaders Face

Despite decades of leadership experience, boardroom influence, and global exposure, this CEO struggled to structure his own story.
That struggle did not co

me from confusion.
It came from the nature of le

The day my biggest leadership mentor attended BWC was that day.

There are moments in a teacher’s life that quietly confirm you are on the right path.
For me, that moment came the day my biggest leadership mentor walked into Book Writing Clinic (BWC).

Unannounced.
Early.
Ready to learn.

It was the same emotion Brendon Burchard once described when Tony Robbins, his own mentor and greatest influence, enrolled in his coaching program. Brendon said it was humbling. Affirming. Transformational.

That was exactly how I felt.

My journey with Richmond Dayo Johnson began around 2011, shortly after I exited my 9–5. I was uncertain, searching, and still finding my footing. One day, I stumbled on RDJ’s website. He exuded confidence, clarity, and leadership. Dressed in exercise gear, shin and knee guards on, he spoke with effortless eloquence.

I remember thinking, being online is for special people like this.
So I scrolled away.

Not long after, fate intervened again. I came across an article RDJ had written in Ovation Magazine. At the end of the piece, he made a bold declaration:
“If you want to speak as well as I do, join Toastmasters.”

That single line changed my trajectory.

I joined Toastmasters International, reconnected with RDJ, and he became my mentor. When he partially relocated to Nigeria to lead a major TV and radio project in Lagos, our relationship deepened. We shared meals, conversations, and countless Toastmasters meetings. That was when he introduced me to the concept of personal branding—long before it became fashionable.

I was a terrible speaker. Truly awful.
Yet after every speech, RDJ would smile and say, “Well done.”

I was often embarrassed.
But he saw what I couldn’t yet see.

When I published Bridges to the Customer’s Heart, RDJ wrote words that still humble me today. He described my work as authentic, experiential, and solution-focused, recommending it “unreservedly.” That endorsement strengthened my confidence and my resolve.

After that book, I became relentless.
“RDJ, you need to write your own book.”

Then one day, without notice, RDJ showed up at Book Writing Clinic.

He arrived before I did.
A stickler for time, as always.

In that moment, the roles shifted.
My mentor had become my mentee.

It remains one of the happiest days of my life.

RDJ began work on his book, Releasing the Imprisoned Splendour. And in that quiet, powerful reversal, I learned a lesson I now teach openly: mentoring and coaching, when done well, are never one-way streets.

When the mentee grows enough, adds enough value, and steps fully into purpose, the relationship evolves. You may one day coach your coach. Mentor your mentor. And deepen the bond in ways you never imagined.

So I’ll leave you with a question worth reflecting on:

A 149-Word Letter That Changed My Life

Years ago, a simple letter from the Chartered Institute of Bankers, London altered the trajectory of my life.

It wasn’t a long letter – just 149 words – but it carried a truth that would shape everything that followed.

In it, the Institute congratulated me on my election to Associateship and said something that struck me deeply:

“If you want to keep in touch with a subject, try teaching it.”

At that moment, I was a young banker – ambitious, driven, and curious.
But I hadn’t realized that the act of teaching could be far more powerful than the pursuit of titles or promotions.

That short line – try teaching it – became my compass.
It pushed me to share what I knew.

And in sharing, I began to grow in ways no classroom, conference, or corporate training could ever provide.

The Multiplier Effect of Teaching

Teaching is the hidden multiplier of life and leadership.
It’s the one skill that compounds every other skill you possess.

When you teach, you deepen your understanding.
When you teach, you expand your reach.
When you teach, you multiply your impact.

Every great leader in history – from Edward Deming and Peter Drucker to Tony Robbins, Seth Godin, and Mel Robbins – built their legacy not just by doing, but by teaching what they did.

Deming taught quality.

When I began teaching, it was to stay “in touch” with my field.

The Tokyo Department Store – Anticipating the Customer

Douglas D. Danforth, former Chairman and CEO of Westinghouse, once shared an unforgettable story.

An American tourist bought a CD player in Tokyo, only to find it was a hollow display model. Before she could complain, the store’s vice president had already traced her through her credit card slip and called to apologize.

The next morning, a team from the store arrived – carrying a new player, a Chopin disc, towels, cakes, and heartfelt apologies.

Compare that to the six-month battle she endured with a Manhattan department store over a simple billing error.

That contrast is the definition of customer intimacy: fix the issue before the customer calls.

Joe Girard – Staying Close, Staying Human

Joe Girard, recognized by Guinness World Records as the greatest car salesman alive, sold more cars each year – for eleven straight years – than anyone else.

His secret? Consistency and care.

Every month, each of his thousands of customers received a handwritten card.
On the front: “I LIKE YOU.”
Inside: a simple seasonal greeting.

Birthday cards. Holiday cards. Random thank-yous.

Joe’s secret was simple – stay close even when there’s nothing to sell.

Passion + System = Excellence

Tom Peters, in In Search of Excellence, wrote that success requires both passion and systems.

Without passion, systems become lifeless. Without systems, passion becomes chaos.

Look at Honda, where employees straighten windshield wipers on parked Hondas out of pride. Or Frito-Lay, whose sales force braves snowstorms to restock chips, ensuring a 99.99% service level.

These are not random acts of diligence. They are cultures of care.

“System without passion is machinery. Passion without system is madness. True excellence is both.”

The Role of Leadership

1. Edwards Deming, father of the quality revolution, once said,

“Quality is made in the boardroom.”

Leadership sets the tone. If leaders care deeply about customers, that passion cascades through every level of the organization.

Policies should reflect empathy. Teams should feel empowered to act. Culture should reward service that goes beyond the script.

Because without a culture of care, even AI can’t make your company feel human. Make “culture of care” #1 item in all your meeting agendas.

Customer satisfaction is no longer a differentiator – it’s the entry ticket.

In the age of algorithms, data, and automation, the new competitive edge is empathy.

AI gives us the power to understand, predict, and respond faster than ever. But it can’t feel.

That’s where humans win.
Customer intimacy means using technology to enhance relationships, not replace them.
It’s knowing your customers so deeply that you can serve their needs today – and anticipate the needs of their children tomorrow. This is the essence of cradle-to-cradle service.

Sadly, almost five years after launching the first iBMC cohort all I’m hearing is crickets.

We left no bases untouched.

The formula was simple:

1. Be generous

2. Be persistent

3. Be consistent

We sang and recited these catch phrases as catechism.

We assigned accountability partners.

BWC members crafted their book outlines.

And read out in public the date their books would see the light of day.

That would be the day they would become PUBLISHED AUTHORS.

But so far, no BWC and iBMC alumni member has cracked the millionaire code.

Despite all the exhortations to think BIG.

Followed by fiery admonition to cleanse our belief system.

Punctuated with sermons to take charge of our minds – winning starts in the mind.

Only FW (one out of almost a thousand) has come close to building an empire.

It would seem I got it disastrously wrong.

I lied.

Mea culpa.

Forgive me.

But, please just hear me out.

The philosopher, Seth Godin, penned a book, All Marketers Are Liars.

Not to forget, Trust Me, I’m Lying, by the inimitable Ryan Holiday.

I’ve now joined the illustrious gang of liars.

Now, I also remember our mantra in every BWC and iBMC cohort.

It was – You can lead a horse to a river but you can’t force it to drink.

We punctuated every admonition, exhortation and lesson with this one proverb.

Our achievement or lack of, underscores the science that success is achieved, not by:

a) Reading inspirational books

b) Attending four figure courses costing $1997 and above

c) Following LinkedIn, X, Instagram and YouTube or Tinder top voices

To move from fussy inspiration to achieving momentum requires one thing:

ACTION.

It requires picking your pen and writing something no matter how silly and laughable.

Yes, the first step in the journey to success is ACTION.

Once you take action, half the battle is won.

Take action consistently for 18 months and come back and free me from the lie prison I’ve found myself in.

Much has been written about the impact Steve Jobs – and Apple – have created.

But do you know that Jobs started by reminiscing about the impact he could create in the world?

He challenged himself and his friends to think deeply – beyond the mundane.

Jobs reminded his friends, “the food we eat, the shoe, watch, tie, etc., we wear, we never invented them.”

That’s how his famous “Leaving a dent on the universe” came about.

To leave a dent on the universe, Jobs challenged his people to ensure every product that came out of Apple “must be insanely great.”

As they say, the rest is history.

Peter Diamandis of X-Prize fame, and author of two iconic books, BOLD, and ABUNDANCE, has a popular quote:

… “If you want to become a billionaire, impact a billion people.”

If you focus on impact, with time, you will WIN.

So, never, never give up.

• To think only the best, to work only for the best, and to expect the best.

• To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.

• To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievement of the future.

• To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.

• To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.

• To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit presence of trouble.

As we march into 2025, make tiny commitments.

To burn the mid-night oil so you can join the ranks of the legends.

Not measured by how fat your bank account is today, but by the impact you’re creating day by day.

Like letting the blind see.

And like writing your first book so you taste immortality

Yes, like setting up your website so you join the information superhighway.

And much more tiny wins.
