MY FIRST BOOK

Credit Appraisal & Procedure Handbook was my first book.

I wrote the book out of desperation and an urgent need to solve a burning problem.

The problem: I had 15 credit officers reporting to me, and all were greenhorns.

They were on national service and posted to the bank subsidiary where I was Head, Credit.

They were full of fire and determination to prove their mettle.

Apart from what they picked up on the job, they had no formal training.

Daily, I was stressed, bombarded with questions and having to redo lots of credit papers.

It was a nightmare.

SOLVING MY PROBLEM

To solve “my problem”, I wrote a credit memo to the general manager, laying out step-by-step how to approach every credit situation.

The GM was very happy and approved the memo and every recommendation.

It was that memo that I repurposed into a book.

The book was 58 pages long, typed single-spaced and comprised two sections:
1.     Credit Appraisal Techniques
2.     Procedure Guidelines

Yes, that was it.

A FLIMSY BOOK LANDED ME A JOB IN LAGOS, AND I BECAME AN INFLUENCER

If I may tell you, I knew nothing about the book industry – I even spelt foreword wrongly: wrote forward.

All I did was get a local printer to print 1,000 copies, which sold out within weeks.

That book cemented my reputation as a credit expert and an author.

That book landed me a job in one of the top three “new generation banks” (at the time) in faraway Lagos, Nigeria.

(I lived in Kaduna, central Nigeria, when I wrote that book).

Yes, that first book gave me the confidence to write another, and another, and another.

That’s how I became the “Paul Uduk” you know today as a “book guru”, expert, executive coach,

influencer, thought leader, speaker, trainer.

It started with just one flimsy book.

And today? I’ve written eight more books, with The Perennial Winner being the latest.

The First CEO I Ghostwrote For and What Surprised Me

When I first ghostwrote for a CEO, I expected complexity.
I prepared for jargon, hierarchy, and endless corporate layers.

Instead, something else surprised me entirely.

What I encountered was not a lack of intelligence.

The Structure Gap Most Leaders Face

Despite decades of leadership experience, boardroom influence, and global exposure, this CEO struggled to structure his own story.

When I first met Dr. Eniayewun Ademuyiwa Benjamin, I had no idea our encounter would evolve into one of the most inspiring legacy-book journeys I have ever witnessed. He was just about 18 months from retirement, yet he carried an urgency that was impossible to ignore. His ideas were powerful, but his scattered notes made it difficult to see the larger story hidden within them.

A day after my presentation at the Lagos State Health Service Commission retreat, he reached out and invited me to lunch. Unknown to me, he was the Permanent Secretary. Unknown to me, he had already read Bridges to the Customer’s Heart. And he had been searching for someone who could transform his raw notes into a book that would articulate his service, struggles, and vision.

Initially, I hesitated, because 18 months is a very short period for a project of such scale and national significance. But as I listened to him, I became convinced that his journey deserved to be documented for posterity.

Within 14 days of our conversation, we signed the agreement. The project became a disciplined journey of structure, interviews, verification, rewriting, and polishing. Dr. Eniayewun was not an ordinary civil servant. His background spanned an impressive range of global training programs, including the University College Hospital Ibadan, Warwick Business School’s MBA, Harvard Business School’s AMP, and several advanced medical programs across Europe and Asia.

More importantly, his courage shaped the future of healthcare in Lagos State. He challenged entrenched interests. He stood against bureaucratic pushback. Endured suspensions, queries, demotions, and character attacks while insisting on patient-centered reforms. His determination eventually earned him appointment as Permanent Secretary, where he implemented sweeping changes aligned with Lagos State’s vision for a world-class healthcare ecosystem. Eighteen months later, on July 8, 2026, we launched TRANSFORMING: My Journey Through the Lagos State Health System. The event shut down Lagos. Leaders, policymakers, and medical professionals gathered to celebrate a man whose service had shifted an entire ecosystem. The governor even broke protocol to attend as Special Guest of Honour, signaling the national importance of the work.

In the acknowledgments, Dr. Eniayewun wrote a deeply humbling line: “Immense gratitude to Paul Uduk, the main engine and driver without whom the book could not have been written.”

His journey proves a simple truth: your scattered notes can become a legacy if you decide to write.

A copyright mistake that cost my friend 6 figures on Amazon you should avoid at all cost.

Amazon KDP is a minefield.

They can ban you and your book without remorse.

So trade Amazon carefully, especially if you’re a beginner.

This is a story from a friend I follow. It is heart wrenching but that’s Amazon for you.

The email from Amazon was terse and final. My top-selling book, a consistent revenue generator, had been permanently removed from the Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) platform.

A single copyright complaint had triggered this drastic action, instantly halting all sales and locking away thousands of dollars in future royalties.

In one moment, a business I had painstakingly built was functionally erased. This was not a simple warning; it was a catastrophic enforcement that cost me over six figures in lost income and exposed a critical flaw in my publishing strategy.

My mistake was both simple and devastatingly common. I had sourced images for my book from what I believed were “free” image websites. While some images were explicitly labeled as royalty-free, others resided in a murky gray area.

I operated under a dangerous misconception of “fair use,” assuming that since I was not directly selling the images and was using them for educational purposes, I would be safe. I was wrong.

Fair use is a complex legal doctrine, not a blanket permission slip for using any content you find online.

According to the U.S. Copyright Office, fair use depends on four factors: the purpose of the use, the nature of the copyrighted work, the amount used, and the effect on the work’s value. My commercial book easily failed this test.

The aftermath was a brutal lesson in Amazon’s zero-tolerance policy. There were no second chances, no appeals process for a confirmed copyright infringement. The offending title was banned, and my account, thankfully, was suspended only temporarily after I removed other publications with similar issues.

However, the damage was done. My book’s reviews, rankings, and sales history – the invaluable algorithms of success on Amazon – were gone forever. I could not simply re-upload a corrected version; to Amazon’s system, it was a completely new product starting from zero.

This experience forced me to become an unwilling expert on intellectual property. I learned that copyright protection is automatic the moment a work is created and fixed in a tangible form.

As stated by the Copyright Alliance, a creator’s work is protected “the moment it is created and fixed in a tangible form that it is perceptible either with or without the aid of a machine or device.”

The absence of a copyright symbol (©) does not mean a work is free to use; it almost certainly is not. This foundational knowledge is non-negotiable for any content creator.

Understanding Amazon’s specific environment is also crucial. The KDP platform operates under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), which provides a safe harbor for online service providers like Amazon from copyright infringement lawsuits – but only if they promptly remove content when a rights holder submits a valid takedown notice.

This structure incentivizes Amazon to act first and ask questions later. They simply cannot afford to risk their entire platform for one publisher’s disputed image choice. Your convenience is never worth their legal liability.
