A very lucrative segment of info marketing is affiliate marketing. It’s basically promoting and selling other people’s products and services. It could be ordinary individuals or companies. You don’t need to have your own products to do affiliate marketing. You get paid affiliate commission. It begins with learning how to do affiliate marketing the right way. The important phrase there is the right way. About three years ago, I jumped into an affiliate marketing relationship with Amazon but I didn’t know the right way so I crashed and burned before I even started.

The funny thing about the internet is that you can make a lot of money from it. With over 3billion people online on any given day, you could plug cash from the internet if you knew “the formula”. I know a young boy in Lagos who makes over N1m (about $2,700) daily from the internet. He started with Fiverr, then went into drop shipping, and today he has diversified into affiliate marketing.

The good news is this: you can make money by doing so many things online. You can blog but it may take you years to make a dime. You can teach on Udemy or do stuff on Freelancer. You can sell pictures, or courses. The choices are endless. This is what I recommend: affiliate marketing (not network marketing) where you promote other people’s stuff and get paid.

About 100 years ago when the agrarian economy was coming to an end, people were still asking for better, more efficient, more effective, more agile, friendlier, more customer-centric, faster, leaner, you name it, horse whips and carts. Henry Ford quipped, “If I would have asked my customers what they wanted, they would have told me a faster horse.”

Henry Ford projected the auto = mobile would be able to run up to 15 miles per hour and there was instant uproar. How can such a contraption be allowed? They squirmed. It will kill people. It will render roads unsafe. Of course, Ford ignored everyone and went on to become the richest man of his era.

Now the industrial era is giving way to the digital era. Barely 30 years old, the internet revolution is minting millionaires and billionaires at a rate never known in human history. Twenty-year-olds, 15-year-olds, 45-year-olds, 60-year-olds, 70-year-olds are building empires from their bedrooms, dormitory rooms, and boardrooms.

Do You Have Money Targets?

The yardstick for measuring achievement in a capitalist or market economy is money, cash, or financial assets. The more you have the better. If you don’t have it the society ignores you. So set money targets. How much do you want to have? By what age? How are you going to make it?

There is no easy way to making money in a market economy. Hard work, focused imagination, unbridled creativity, aligned mindset, the right exposure, relevant and up-to-date knowledge of the philosophy of making money all play a part. Luck too. Risk-taking too. That is where the mindset comes in.

Create Your Platform If You Wish To Grow Exponentially And Bank Millions

To succeed massively in the high octane, topsy-turvy, borderless environment of the internet, you need a platform or better still, platforms. It has always been so. Platforms come in various forms, shapes, and sizes. They bear names such as Society, Institute, Club, or Movement.

Along the way, some of them remove the appendages that used to identify them. So you have Rotary, Lions, Toastmasters, Boys Scout Movement, Girls Guide, Institute of Bankers, Society of Engineers, Ikoyi Club, Red Cross, World Economic Summit, Freemason, TED, and so on.

Platforms launch out for an assortment of causes, sometimes very lofty. The majority are not-for-profit. But don’t be deceived, they may not call it profit but they do generate massive surpluses. Where do you think those surpluses go to? Do you think the founders dump them in the Atlantic or Indian Oceans?

Those profits (sorry, surpluses) end up in the founders’ pockets. Some of these movements, clubs, institutes, or societies are over one hundred years old and their founders have since long died but their estates or the foundations they founded continue to receive the surpluses and will continue to do so till thy kingdom come.

A great number had set up foundations to shield the founders’ families from the prying eyes of the public while they quietly continue to milk the cows they set up. So what I’m saying is this, you need a PLATFORM if you want or wish to scale and become stupendously wealthy. Thanks to the internet, your Platform can easily scale and reach the entire universe within the twinkle of an eye.

Do you know that Facebook is a platform with about 3 billion active users? What of Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Instagram and the like? Each of these platforms has users running into a billion or close to. Do you know why Google Plus (G+) decided to close down? Because it had a paltry 345million users so Google decided it was not worth their trouble.

You may say these are huge endeavours beyond the capacity of mere mortals like me and you. I would counter by saying wait a minute, was Mark Zuckerberg not a mere mortal when he set up FB?

But do you know that you can still set up a Platform with just one, ten, twenty, fifty or one hundred thousand members and dance all the way to the bank? It is not magic. I belong to some of these Platforms. Some are free and some require a subscription. What I’m saying is, you need a Platform of yours to start milking your cow. Please don’t get me wrong. To set up and scale juicy Platforms require grit, strategy, tactics, massively transformative purpose, hard work, endurance, determination, persistence and the “X” factor of never, never, never giving up. Get hold of someone who knows how to set up profitable Platforms to help you get started. Ask him salient questions and if you get satisfactory answers latch onto her coattails.

He’s in a special class of his own. Don’t go there.

But what of Michelle Schroeder-Gardner? As I mentioned above, she is the owner of Making Sense of Cents blog. She started blogging as a hobby in 2011 and today grosses about $150,000 monthly. And there are many others ahead of her. Gary Vaynerchuk, Neil Patel, Pat Flynn, and Jon Morrow, readily come to mind.  They all started from zero, knowing nothing about online marketing or internet business and through trial and error crushed it. By a tweak of fate, by the time I was through with university, my dad was taken ill and never fully recovered until he passed away. But one day before he died, my dad surprised me. He said, Paul, sit down, let me teach you about generosity.

But before I share with you what my father taught me, this is a brief about my father. My father was a teacher. He was not just an ordinary teacher, he was a headmaster. Next to bank managers, teachers were the most respected people in society then. My father had what was referred to as Higher Elementary in those days – that was the early fifties. Higher Elementary was probably the equivalent of a West African Examination Council Certificate. But there is a huge difference. My dad was taught by the “white man” (the British). They inculcated in him a sense of duty, hard work, and community. There were hardly other teachers of his caliber that I knew.

My father excelled in agriculture and won awards. His barn was full of assorted yams, pumpkins, and other crops. Whenever agricultural exhibitions were held in the catchment area, district or division, my father invariably came out on top. I vividly remember some of his exhibits that were bigger, taller and fatter than me. Some were so big they had to be carried by hand-pushed trucks. Teachers in surrounding schools trooped in to learn from the magician – my father.

My father was as straight as an arrow when it came to integrity. All the relief materials during the civil war, amounting to thousands of tons (or millions of Naira if you like), were entrusted to my father. Funnily, even as we were starving, he never took a pin, even a tin of sardine, home. I guess he believed we were not refugees. I hated him then on that score. However, when I hear government people talk about corruption today, I remember my father with pride. To read more go here.

This is my call to you. Learn how to make money from your book and other information and educational products fast or go into oblivion. Why you may ask? The reason is because the time has changed and continues to change. So if you’re not taking advantage of the change from the analog ways of doing things to digital ways, you’re bound to be left behind at best, or starve to death at worst.

This is an unusual mail but read it with an open mind. Sadly, most people in Africa have been left behind.

This is the truth though. People wrote me fat post-dated cheques. When I called them whether to present the cheques, they would say, the ship I was expecting sank in the Atlantic Ocean. Some would say hold on a few days more. So to be frank, I only saw cash of about seven figures from the book launch.

But that is where the story begins. Since the book launch, I have made additional eight figures from the book sales and spinoff businesses from the book and more continues to roll in.  Banks, manufacturing companies, NGOs, schools and a host of organizations have bought thousands of copies. But more than that, it has opened doors to palaces, executive suites and penthouses.

This is what happened leading to spinoff businesses from my book, Bridges to the Customer’s Heart. A year or two after the book came out,  I asked one of my senior colleagues to keynote a Workshop I was organizing and he said “No” emphatically. I was taken aback and was determined to know why.

When I finally caught up with him, he told me in black and white,  “I’m not the right person to Keynote your seminar.” Then he reached into his briefcase and brought out his complimentary card, scribbled something on it, and handed it to me as he whispered, “take this note to Mr. Phillip.”

Mr. Phillip (not real name) was delighted to receive the note. He was even more delighted to see my book. That single introduction has yielded me millions in spin off businesses.

Supposing I had gone there empty handed, that is, without my book, I believe the outcome would have been far more different. As we joke about books, your book can get to Buckingham Palace but it’s very unlikely you as an author can get in there easily.

More dramatic, as a direct result of my book, I was invited as a Motivational Speaker to address the top management of one of the biggest oil services firms in the country. I politely told the Human Resources executive that invited me that I’m not a motivational speaker. My only claim to fame is that I’m an author of a book. The HR executive said to me, “Sorry, we’ve already sent your name as the Motivational Speaker and it’s too late to alter the event’s program.”

The organizers picked me up in their company helicopter. I landed at a mighty gulf course in the middle of nowhere and I was immediately zipped in a limousine to a five star exclusive private guest house. At the venue I immediately handed a copy of my book to the chief executive officer of the company. He gleefully announced my arrival and waved a copy of my book to the admiration of the crowd. That was my first standing ovation.

I made my presentation, doing the best I could. To my utter delightment and surprise, rather than take me back to the airport as was planned, the CEO pleaded with me to stay to the end of two-day retreat. Then added, “I will personally take you back to Lagos with my Gulf Stream.” To this date, we’re on first name basis with this business mogul, and I have also earned millions in seminar fees from his group of companies.

So learn how to make money from your books and other information and educational products starting today. As you can see, it’s not difficult. You only need to write just one book. The two stories I’ve related here are just a tip of the iceberg. There are hundreds of other stories associated with my book, Bridges to the Customer’s Heart. Even though I have written six other books, Bridges, dubbed the Customer Service Bible, is the only of my books I ever launched .

From the foregoing you now know how you can make over eight figures by writing, publishing, and launching your book. Just write and launch, you never know how far your book would go. It could even land at the White House.

Three years or so before I knew anything about speaking professionally for megabucks I read an article I considered one of the best-written articles of all time. It was about excellence and its underlying essence. Towards the end of that article, the writer remarked with an air of finality, ‘‘if you wish to write and speak as phenomenally as I do, join Toastmasters.’’

I thought Toastmasters were these guys that wear funny suits with long tails otherwise called comedians so I laughed his assertion off but, however, kept it in my heart. Incidentally, I didn’t know much about the writer’s background or antecedents then, but he turned out to be Nigeria’s internationally acclaimed motivational speaker of The Debaters and Radio Continental fame, Richmond Dayo Johnson (RD).

A year or so later, I attended a seminar organized by the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) at Transcorp Hotel (then called Hilton), Abuja. Of the ten presenters, who were all managing directors and chief executive officers of some of Nigeria’s finest companies, one was head and shoulders above the rest. His presentation was electric; he presented with class and panache. He was audible, fluid, and fluent. He put the audience at the center of his presentation.  The whole presentation was enriched with multimedia, with video clips, and audio.

Trust me, I was curious! During the tea break, I caught up with him to learn his talisman. Do you know what he told me? Reading the name tag on my pinstriped suit jacket, he intoned, also with an air of finality, “Paul you know what, if you want to be able to present the way I presented, join Toastmasters.”

That’s when it sank in. At that time I didn’t know him but the mysterious presenter turned out to be the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Unified Payment System Limited (then ValueCard), Mallam Kyari Bukar. Kyari, who later became the CEO of Central Securities Clearing Services (CSCS) had been a Toastmaster for over ten years before we met while working with HP (Hewlett Packard) in the US.

I didn’t need additional evidence that Toastmasters was the place to be. I joined Toastmasters in 2007, and in 2010 I was deeply humbled when I was inducted the 4th President of the Eagle Toastmasters Club. With the change of baton in the Club, the work of bringing more Nigerians to enjoy the benefits of what Toastmasters offers began anew and Ralph Smedley’s dream lived on. Ralph Smedley founded Toastmasters International in 1924.

William Blake it was that said, “on one side there are things that are known, on the other side there are things that are unknown, in between them are always doors.” If you are out there and truly desire to be extraordinary, with the skills to speak with fluency, fluidity, and tons of confidence, I want to urge you to use the door of opportunity that Toastmasters offers to move your act to world class. The best time to have started was yesterday, the next best time is now.

The number one task of a leader is to keep hope alive. Toastmasters teaches leadership and communication skills in an atmosphere of laughter, fun, and camaraderie. No other club compares when it comes to personal development. There are over 350,000 Toastmasters clubs in more than 200 countries and territories all over the world. And the good news is that you can attend a Toastmasters meeting anywhere in the globe where you happen to be.

The century we are in rewards extraordinary people. Today we have an august visitor who traveled across town to see us. She came with her three kids in tow. Interestingly, we have not seen or heard from her for close to seven years. You can guess, she didn’t alert us she was coming. It got me thinking. Supposing she came and there was no one at home? Is this how she lives her life? Sadly this is our signature behaviour all over Africa. It’s to do with our extended family system. For now, only anthropologists can confirm my suspicion.

This is my candid advice. Don’t jump into any business, or even writing your book for that matter blindly. If you want to succeed in any endeavour, set clear project goals. I didn’t practice what I am telling you when I wrote my first six books, and guess what, I paid a steep price for my stupidity. I don’t want you to repeat my mistakes.

These are some of the things I did wrong. I handed 1,000 copies of my very first book, Credit Procedure Handbook (now out of print) to a conman who sweet-talked me to believe him and he vanished into thin air. Who would not have believed such a man? I’d been buying books from him for over 5 years so I trusted him. Big mistake! Trust no one. Have an agreement. Donald Trump insists even in a marriage, you must have a pre-nuptial. Be warned!

For my second book, I traveled all over Nigeria to place the book in bookshops: Jos, Kaduna, Zaria, Ibadan, Calabar, Abuja, all over Lagos, Uyo, you name it. Before I woke up from my stupidity, it was too late. I couldn’t go back to those places to find out how the book was doing. Don’t give your book out for free, demand for cash.

I can go on and on what I did wrong but your time is precious. One word, don’t repeat my mistakes. These are some sub-goals John Locke taught me to set.

• Determine your target market
• Complete your manuscript
• Write a book that will sell
• Get your book into print
• Create a website
• Create a blog site
• Do a blog interview
• Get great reviews
• Build a mailing list
• Get quality Twitter followers

One thing Harvard, Wharton, and Oxford, talk less the lesser universities, won’t teach you, is to hang out with millionaires. Though the millionaires retain  some of the most outstanding professors from these ivy league schools as private advisors and consultants, for reasons best known to them, they will never teach you to hang out with the millionaires.

A few years ago when my book, Bridges to the Customer’s Heart, came out, I started hanging out with millionaires and I’ve never looked back. You see why I keep telling you to write your book? It will open doors. I’m just kidding.

Okay keep the joke aside. I have a secret DVD I watch every month end to recharge. It’s by Nido Qubein, and the title is “How to get Anything You Want: Proven Strategies for Success & Significance. It’s one of my secret weapons to stay energized. Nido said his mother taught him one thing; if you want to be a millionaire, hang out with millionaires.  I didn’t catch it at the beginning but as I hanged out with more millionaires, its full meaning sank in.

It was then I remembered Don King’s powerful boast years back. Don King is a legendary boxing promoter, whose friends include Donald Trump. King once boasted his intention was to become the first African American billionaire. When an inquisitive journalist asked King how he intended to actualize his dream, King retorted, “I’ve just told you,  by hanging out with billionaires.”

So why should you take this very seriously. Because your life will change! And change for the better. You’ll not have to struggle to accomplish anything. And besides, you’ll have more money to pay tithes if you’re the religious type. Again I’m kidding here.

Three benefits of hanging out with millionaires you should not only note but take to heart. I mean don’t just take to heart, start practicing tomorrow. You can start by hanging out with me. Okay you may say but Paul you’re not a millionaire. Don’t be deceived, I am. In Naira; and now also gunning to make it in Dollars. These are the top three benefits why you should hang out with millionaires:

1. You’ll start thinking, behaving and doing things like a millionaire: You may not fully understand this but it’s something psychological. It’s called the principle of transference. Those of you that did biology in school will remember the process of osmosis. Yes, what the millionaire knows unconsciously passes from him or her to you. Remember your teacher used to say, tell me your friend, and I will tell you who you are. The principle applies everywhere. If you want to be a great boxer, or musician or teacher, hang out with the greatest in those fields and one day you’ll be like them.

2. They will reveal their secrets to you – when they trust you: I’m adding the second part, ‘when they trust you’ as a caveat. You must be trustworthy to merit being admitted into a millionaire’s inner circle. One millionaire friend told me, Paul, if you want to be rich don’t work for someone. He was encouraging me to go into business on my own or for myself. Then he added, if you work hard, you’ll succeed – for yourself and not for your employer. Then he taught me how he got his stock; why you shouldn’t compete with your distributors; and why thrift in business is paramount to success.

3. They will introduce you to other millionaires: Even though among millionaires there is a pecking order, they all flock together. The beauty of the game is such that every millionaire wants to introduce you to his circle of millionaires. You see, the truth in networking even at the millionaire level is that you must always bring something to the table. The unwritten rule in networking is, you must give more than you take. So if you introduce an invaluable resource to a friend, you’ve added something to his emotional bank account and so it continues.

So those are the three benefits why you should hang out with millionaires in a nutshell.  You’ll start thinking, behaving and doing things like a millionaire; they will reveal their secrets to you – when they trust you; and they will introduce you to other millionaires thus exploding your reach. Before you reach out to a millionaire always ask yourself this one question, what am I bringing to the table? You cannot walk over to a millionaire and give her $5,000 or even $100,000 and say, madam, I admire your accomplishments. She will rebuff you. First, she doesn’t need your money. Second, she will think you’re trying to show off. Third, it’s unethical and doesn’t portray you in good light as someone well groomed.

But supposing you’ve just written a book with great reviews and you arrange one for her. Your book may be for just $25 but you may hear her exclaim, oh is this the book they’ve been talking about? As I keep saying, your book can open the doors to Buckingham Palace, but on your own, forget it. Now you see where Book Writing Clinic comes in. There is a millionaire waiting somewhere to meet you. Not too long ago a publishing agent wrote to me from the UK seeking to know if I could write for a US publisher “for global electronic distribution at very lucrative terms.” Among the books the US publisher was looking for was a short guide of 3,000 to 5,000 words. I pinched myself. How did I move from an unknown back-office banker just a few years ago to a thought leader operating in seven dimensions today? I did a few things but let me share with you the top 7 mistakes I made before I was able to move from here to there so you don’t repeat same, which could be fatal in today’s fast paced economy.

1. I didn’t believe in myself: Huge mistake. It took joining Toastmasters and a trip to Calgary, Canada, for a complete stranger to tell me, “Paul look inwards, you have all it takes.” I did just that. Toastmasters International builds your confidence and when once you have confidence nothing can stop you.

2. I thought I was not smart enough to write a book: When you compare yourself to legends like Ken Blanchard, Tom Peters and Steven Covey, you feel paralyzed that your book will never measure up. You don’t have to. They all started somewhere. Just start. Write your first book.

3. I didn’t believe in my book: Another huge mistake closely aligned to the self-defeating beliefs number one and two above. I thought no one needed another book on customer service so I left my manuscript to gather dust for years. Oh, how wrong I was! My book, Bridges to the Customer’s Heart is now referred to as the Customer Service Bible.

4. I didn’t seek help: One of the worst mistakes you can do to your career in any field. Going blindly into battle. Ignorance of the law, you have heard, is not an excuse. I knew nothing about the publishing business and I didn’t know how the book industry really works. You don’t need to know anything about how the book publishing industry works, all you need is to seek help. Look for someone that knows. Get a coach. Get a mentor. Find anybody that can help you.

5. I thought I needed to publish with the top five global publishers: Nothing can be as foolhardy as writing to Pearson, Elsevier, Penguin Random House, Wiley, or Simon & Schuster that you want your works published. You manuscript goes straight to the trash can. There are other ways. Self-publish your book through Author House, Trafford and many other self-publishing companies. Better still head to Amazon KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) and get your book done and dusted. You can have your book in paperback, eBook, and audio almost for free on Amazon within a day.

6. I thought I needed a huge capital: I went to a big publisher in Ibadan and they gave me a bill of N5million (about $3.5million in those days). The one in Lagos charged me N5,000 for ‘manuscript submission’ (and I paid) and N3.5million for publishing. Madness! Don’t mortgage your family farm, house, and your entire future to publish a book. You can do it for almost free now right on your website.

7. I was born too early: Yes as you can guess, there was no internet in those days and there was no Book Writing Clinic. Nothing! As a matter of fact, if you needed to get anything done, you needed to travel to London or New York or Paris. Today, you need just your laptop and smartphone. This is the best time in all of human civilization to be alive. Wake up and walk. Don’t wait for miracles.

There you are. Those are the top 7 mistakes or lies that held me back. Don’t allow anything to hold you back. Write and publish your book without much sweat. The world needs your wisdom, the world needs your point of view, the world needs your story. Wake up and write. You may make money along the way but that’s not the main point. By writing you gain immortality. You’ll feel contented. There is no better feeling. Imagine visiting libraries all over the world and seeing readers, young and old, reading your creation. Imagine walking through some of the world’s most beautiful airports and seeing your books displayed. Imagine your books on Amazon.
