The question I want to ask you straight off the bat is, are your creating your own luck? If you’re not creating your own luck, you’re probably waiting for someone else to create it for you. Or you’re probably waiting for luck to fall on your lap. Well let me tell you this; the chances of luck falling on your lap are one in seven billion. Why do I say that? Because there are seven billion people on the planet Earth and luck has not fallen on their laps.
How Pat Fly Created His Own Luck
Though he would not admit he’s a guru, Pat Flynn is one of the gurus I have learned from since I started to figure out what online business was all about. His vehicle was his series of courses, eBooks and blog posts under the banner of Smart Passive Income (SPI). I first stumbled on SPI around 2013 or thereabout and I even downloaded one of Pat’s free eBooks, in which he exhorted newbies like us to jump online. The truth is, I didn’t understand 99% of the terminologies such as lead magnet, landing page, sales funnel and the like.
Since then Pat has launched FlynnCon and pivoted to podcasting, one of iTunes top Business podcasts with over 47million downloads. How did Pat transform from a broke architect to a towering online figure with estimated networth of $3million, about N1.8billion in just 14 years when some of us work for 35 years and retire in penury? Pat did one thing. Pat created his own luck. And you can also create your own luck, but first, here is Pat’s origin story directly from his website.
Pat Flynn’s Origin Story
On June 17th, 2008 I was laid off from my dream job as an architect, and although I didn’t know it at the time, it was the best thing that could ever happen to me.
My painful layoff opened up my eyes to the amazing world of entrepreneurship, and since then I’ve built several successful online businesses, impacted millions of people around the world, and I get to spend more time with my family, too.
I didn’t go to business school and I’m not an expert copywriter or genius marketer. I am, however, a person who knows that building a successful business is about helping serve others first, and then building a team, or systems, to lean into that service even more.
My goals in life are NOT to buy an island, drive a lambo or live in a 10 bedroom home on the hills of Hollywood.
My goals are instead to inspire everyone around me through the actions that I take, the lessons that I learn and the happiness I can share with others.
Pat Flynn has summarized his origin story. Here is a small detail. After he lost his job, one of the first things he did was to create a course that helps students of architecture pass the State of California rigorous professional architectural practice exams. He said he could not believe his eyes when someone paid $4 to download the course. It was not really a course in the conventional sense of it since he didn’t know how to design a course; it was just a collection of ideas he put together in the form of a downloadable PDF. Since that momentous minute someone downloaded his “course”, Pat has never looked back.
Pat’s Life’s Principles
Pat has three life’s principles that he says guide everything he does. I particularly like his #1 principle, which says: The best and worst things in life are usually the things that happen unplanned. He went on to explain, “When bad things happen, learn from them and vow to not repeat the behaviors that allowed them to happen. When good things come along, take advantage of them and learn how to stimulate more good things like them to happen. That’s called creating your own luck, which is a far better option than trying to control the uncontrollable.”
You Can Create Your Own Luck Too
So back to my original question: Are You Creating Your Own Luck? As Pat Flynn says, creating your own luck is a far better option than trying to control the uncontrollable. You can’t control floods, bad roads, bandits, herdsmen, unknown gunmen, wicked politicians, corruption, PHCN, runaway inflation, the exchange rate, but you can focus on things that you can control. Like creating a course that nets you $4.
Why A Course?
There are so many ways of making money online but courses represent one thing anybody can do. Why? Because each and every one of us have skills, passion, knowledge, ideas, wisdom and experience to pass on to other people, who will find it useful and helpful. All you have to do is to find out whether there is enough demand for what you have to offer. Luckily, there are ways you can find out whether there is sufficient demand for your idea to justify your course. Do not underrate what you know because every person’s junk is another person’s treasure. First and foremost, believe in yourself.
